Cross Country relay season over
The British Masters Athletic Federation Cross Country relays at Moorways Stadium, Derby continues to attract high quality competition. LERC had one womens team and three mens teams. Each 3.1k leg was two of the short laps around the grounds surrounding the track.
The womens race was first. 2nd in 2012, and 4th in 2013, the team of three were a brave 8th out of 14 complete teams in the V35-44 age category. Lindsay Smith lead off, followed by Sarah Priestley, and Sharon Orridge who ran the 7th fastest time on the day, of 12mins 23 secs.
In the Mens event, LERC strongest team was the V45-54 team, having achieved 4th and 6th previously. With sadly, only 5 complete teams, LERC was 5th, but competed well with Dicky Wilkinson, Paddy Fitzgerald, Dave Boot, Tim Baggs and Andy Dickenson all posting consistent leg times. Andys 11 mins 11 secs was particularly impressive.
The V35-44 A team ran well to achieve 15th place, with Ian Chant running LERCs 2nd fastest leg time of 11 mins 52 secs.
LERC V35-44 B team was 17th.
One week later, at Mansfields Berry Hill Park, LERC teams competed once again in the English Cross Country Relay Championships. In perfect cross country conditions and surroundings, the women had two teams in the 3 x 3k race. Once again Sharon, Lindsay & Sarah combined to finish 58th team out of 98 in an extremely high quality race. The B team of Cath Benson, Leanne Smith & Sue Ward ran superbly to finish 86th.
The mens race of 4 x 5k legs, our A team of Rich Wilkinson, Tim Baggs, Rob Allen & Richard Howe finished in 111th place, against the cream of the countries athletes and clubs. The B team of Phil Abbott, John Hay, Matt Weightman & Shaun Burton battled on to come home in 134th out of 143 complete teams.
