Cross Country season over with a bang
Last weekend was a big one for the club, and the end to the cross country for this season. Saturdays English National Championship at Wollaton Park was a huge success, with both competitors and our marshalling contingent representing the club superbly. I have already received an E-mail from the Clerk of the Course thanking LERC for our combined efforts. A personal thanks from me to those who helped with our bit. Apparently, the whole course was judged to have been generally dry and firm, and fast! Not from where we were standing.
As for the race; its all about just taking part with such big fields with team finishes almost irrelevant, but first LERC runners in were Lindsay Smith (367th) and Greg Cherry (363rd & shook Johnny Brownlees hand!!). Andy Peat was 150th and will surely be reverting his 1st claim status after a quiet afternoon by Birchfield Harriers. A mention also to Paul Allcock (515th) Mark Boardman had taken on the task of co-ordinating our entries, but sadly had to withdraw after 2 laps, bad luck Mark. Well done to our other finishers/starters. All results at: www.englishcrosscountry.co.uk, or in our results on the web-site.
Winter League Cross Country.
We also had a magnificent turnout at yesterdays East Mids XC fixture, with many answering the call to forego running and to marshal instead. We got the balance between staging the race, and competing right this time. Again, the event went really well, helped (as with Saturday) by good weather.
Afterwards, after years of finishing this league at the Furnace Inn, Derby, we now had the honour and retired to the Tappers Harker to await the final standings. After drawing a complete blank last season, our Vet Men scooped the A team prize, having won all 4 races in that category.
The runners who counted at least once were; Paul Lewis, Andy Dickenson, Dave Boot, Rich Wilkinson, Paddy Fitzgerald, Dave Clough, Tim Baggs, Al Maplethorpe, Rob Fox & Dicky Halloran.
Earlier this month, we also completed the 5-race Booths XC series, the Mens team taking 2nd overall team spot, with the Ladies contributing to LERCs 5th place in the combined league. With a minimum of 4 races required for an individual runner to feature in the overall table, the following positions were achieved:
Senior/LV35 Women (combined) Lindsay Smith - 6th
Senior Men Paul Allcock - 3rd
Mark Boot - 4th
Greg Cherry - 6th
Rich Howe - 14th
VM45 Dave Boot - 1st
John Hay - 12th
VM50 Rob Fox - 3rd
Al Maplethorpe - 8th
Sadly, only Paul, Mark & Dave are to receive awards. To be held after 2nd Booths summer league race. A great series from Greg and Lindsay as well to achieve top 6 finishes.
The Mens runners who contributed to the team 2nd spot were; Greg Cherry, Paul Allcock, Mark Boot, Dave Boot, Gav Kennedy, Ian Chant, Paddy Fitzgerald, Ed Murden, Rob Fox, Rich Wilkinson, Rich Howe, Rob Allen & Paul Burchell.
