Midlands Masters AC 10 mile Championship (Sneyd 10 mile)
Not to be out-done by the Turkey Trotting LERC hoardes, four other club members were medal-hunting at the Sneyd 10 mile road race, Bloxwich, which incorporated the 2012 Midlands Masters AC Championship.
Rod and Sarah Harris planned a twin assault on their respective age categories, this being a delayed introduction to masters athletics for Rod, having been side-lined since his 40th birthday by health issues. Rich Wilkinson and Rob Fox were chasing honours in the V50 age group. Rod, Rich and Rob also entered as a V35-44 team with Rich and Rob down-aging.
On a cold, breezy but bright morning, and on a 2 - lap course, the competition in a field of over *** was surprisingly stiff. Each lap comprised, a housing estate, a long back straight which was slightly uphill, followed a final downhill mile, with the breeze against on the uphill stretch. Nevertheless, a well-marshalled, fair course with fast times possible.
Rod ran superbly and is truly back to form, clocking 56.07 for 6th place, and a MMAC Gold for 1st V40. Sarah, despite stopping 4 times for a self-massage on a trouble-some hamstring, still finished as 3rd Lady overall in a magnificent sub-60 59.45, and a MMAC Gold as 1st LV35.
Rob and Rich finished in 61.23 & 63.06 respectively for 2nd & 3rd MMAC V50 positions, the latter knocking over a minute of his recent BMAF 10 mile champs time. The LERC men were also in 1st place in the MMAC M35-44 team category, beating much bigger local clubs such as Tipton, Coventry & Birchfield.
