Shepshed 7
On Sunday 4th November it was the 8th winter league race of the season, the Shepshed 7: a scenic, yes that’s right, 7 mile, strangely almost traffic free 2 lap course through Garendon Park. 16 LERCers made their way down to this well organised event which, apart from the school playing field, was all track and road, albeit a bit muddy with puddles in places.
For the men, Mark Boot was 1st in for Long Eaton Running Club in 14th position and Dave Boot 2nd with a PB of over 2 minutes. David Riley made his debut and achieved a PB by more than 12 minutes. Peter Webb and Michael Lockwood also made great debuts at this race and were followed by Phil Thompson, who also achieved a great PB by 1 minute 10. Also with good runs were Shaun Burton, Aaron Kirk, Damian Cowlinshaw and Ian Wallis.
Rachel Argent was 1st back for the ladies with a better time than last year of 48 seconds, followed by Carrie Chan who also achieved a great PB by 3 minutes 21 seconds. For our next lady, Charlie Mercer, it was her 1st time wearing a LERC vest and racing for the club and she had a great debut run, coming in 3rd. It was a great achievement, as she expected to do 10 minute mile pace, but finished having covered the course at 9 minute pace! Jane Newbold showed some great running and was close behind Charlie in 4th. The race also saw a much welcomed return for Maria White, this being her 1st race after having come back from an injury in July. Another great PB on the day came from Karen Preston, as she bettered her previous best by 2 minutes 47 seconds, having ran the London Kilomathon the weekend before.
There was a great team spirit, with everyone cheering others to the finish line and being rewarded with a nice bright technical t-shirt to be seen in the dark with. Well done to all.
