Midlands Counties Cross Country Championship

The Midlands Counties Cross Country Championship took place at Wollaton Park on Saturday 28th Jan. This is the region’s top club race with clubs from as far away as Avon taking part, as well as the usual East and West Midlands rivals, and those from the north of the region. With the event being staged on our doorstep, it was important that LERC produced a strong showing.
In great cross country running conditions and surroundings, three ladies and eight men completed the course with Rob Fox unfortunately having to pull out shortly after starting the second lap due to a sore calf.
The ladies race was nominally 8k and Natalie Teece proved that her selection for the Derbyshire County senior ladies team was no fluke with an outstanding run for 40th position out of 167 finishers. Good luck in the Inter-Counties Nat. She was joined by Cath Benson who finished in an excellent 110th position, and Sarah Kuehne who battled around the slightly heavy course for a fine 156th spot.
The men’s team in a race over a course which was slightly shorter than the stated 12k, was magnificently lead by Andy Peat and Blane Crawford, who helped each other to 101st and 107th places respectively, out of a field of 412. Andy Dickenson was next to finish, in 181st, followed by Paddy Fitzgerald (200th), Dave Boot (233rd) and Mark Lay (269th) who all made up the clubs six-man team score. Richard Howe (288th) and Shaun Burton (376th) both ran well to complete the LERC contingent.
The men’s team finished in 21st place out of 44 complete teams, and 19th club as both Notts AC and Coventry GH had more than one team. An excellent effort.
Finally, the runners were extremely well supported out on the course so a big thanks to those who had taken the time to attend.
