Road

Derwentwater 10

A clockwise circuit around the lake by Keswick in the northern Lake District on a dry, sunny blue sky day produced fast times and a record entry of 580. With narrow winding roads, long inclines and some steep hills this isn’t an easy course but Paul Lewis recorded a pb of 54:27 for 7th place. Andy Colgate 61:59 39th and Debbie Coleman 1:26:28 403rd also made the long trip north.

Fell

Dunnerdale

Strong winds and heavy hail minutes before the race cleared to a windless blue sky for this 5 mile 1800 foot over the fells of Dunnerdale from Broughton Mills in the Lake District. A long initial climb then good paths some wet underfoot for the remaining runnable 3 summits to finish at the village hall for tea and hot pies. Dicky Wilkinson finished 80th in 54:01 a long way behind race winner and English and British V40 Fell Running Champion Lloyd Taggart in 38:28.

Roaches

A gloriously muddy and farm slurry enhanced race with long inclines, steep ascents, intricate gritstone boulder running, slippery leaved woodland paths and a double river crossing, the Roaches at 15.8 miles and 3700 feet is a fine way that most peakland adventurers choose to end a years fell racing. Rod Harris, no stranger to the fells with past outings over the hills of Jura and Borrowdale, ran a tremendous 3rd place in 2:16:28. Phil Abbott in his 3rd event of the weekend clocking up 38 miles of racing was 97th in 3:02:28, Bill Sheppard 3:25:16 146th, Colin Bostock 3:28:02 154th and great to see Mark Harrison tackle one of the classic hill races in 3:33:41 for 166th. The contest for 2nd and 3rd places in the club’s Fell League V50 Championships goes all the way to the last race with Bill and Colin on equal points.
