Urban – obstacle

Men’s Health Survival of the Fittest, Nottingham

A tough urban assault course, starting and finishing at the Victoria Embankment by the river Trent taking in a course that’s part urban part rural out to Holme Pierrepont. Described as “a test of stamina, grit, speed and guts” it has amongst its joys, a ‘roadworks slalom’, ‘a river crossing’, ‘small lake traverse’, hay bales and knotted ropes. Laura Froggatt completed in 1:34:03.

Fell

Nine Edges Endurance Race

You can choose to hike, mountain bike, climb on or, as Duncan Gedge elected to do, run on the nine gritstone edges in the Peak District between Fairholmes and the Robin Hood pub near Baslow. The race, in support of Edale Mountain Rescue, takes in rough moorland paths and runners must have navigation skills. Duncan covered the 20.4 miles and 2930 feet in 3:41.

Grin and bear it

15.5 miles and 1950 feet around the Derwent watershed in aid of Woodhead Mountain Rescue, has its fair share of rough terrain and many a runner has a tussle with the ‘bog monster’ somewhere on route. Colin Bostock completed in 3:06:40.

Hope Moors and Tors

Organised by the Dark and White events team, the race comprises a long course of 20 miles and one of 8.5 miles. Unlike the perfect conditions of last year, father and son Tony and Jon Vardy battled the elements on the 1500 foot climb 8.5 mile race. With the climb up the steep limestone Cave Dale turned into a fast flowing stream, and a howling gale and near horizontal rain along the whale-back Mam Tor to Lose Hill ridge and with clouds scudding by on Back Tor, Jon had a tremendous run in 1:39 for 26th and with Tony returning from injury with a fine 1:45 for 44th , both can be pleased with a safe completion in good times. On the long course, a marshall fell neck deep into Grindsbrook and was almost swept away with the strength of the increased volume of water and near the Kinder plateau rim the stream was being forced back uphill by the gale!

Windgather

At 13.5 miles and 2500 feet, Windgather is the final race in the Goyt Valley series in the western Peak District. Starting and finishing on the edge of Buxton, it climbs to the summit of Shining Tor and circles Fernilee Reservoir and has fast runnable sections. Colin Bostock led home in 2:20:50 for 179th, Bill Sheppard 3:20:22 236th and Cath Rowe 3:20:23 237th.

British Fell Running Championships

With the final point scoring event being the Black Mountains race in Wales, the best 3 out of 4 race Championship series concluded with Dicky Wilkinson running for Dark Peak finishing as =27th V50.
