Ultra

Dicky Wilkinson’s final event in the three race UK Trail Running Championship was over the 86.5 mile 9000 feet 5000 year old trackway of the Ridgeway Path from Ivinghoe Beacon to Avebury over the Chiltern ridge escarpment. After briefly sharing 3rd place 24 miles into the race after the noonday start, he began slowing after the initial pace and incurred a couple of muscle strains. As day turned to night with over 30 miles remaining Wilkinson gamely ran on encouraged by his support crew of Rosie Thornley and Rob Fox with the pace slowing further and losing positions but arrived shortly after dawn at the finish for 18 hours 40 minutes 14th and a British V50 bronze medal. Shortly after completing and near collapse he was taken to Swindon hospital suffering from acute renal failure and after a six day stay was released with no long term damage. A worrying end to a fine effort and with uncertain causes. Some small consolation from the race in winning the V50 bronze alongside the V50 bronze and the win in the short and long distance events in the three race series, was being the first ever to achieve a medal in each race in the same year and, for 2010, becoming the overall UK Trail Running Champion.

Road

Newstead Abbey Dash

A 3 mile out and back thrash on the roads in the private grounds of Newstead Abbey saw a number of club debuts and course bests. After a downhill start followed by a climb and then out to the turn around point and under the trees Paul Lewis’s consistent training and pace judgement on the night allowed him to take the lead within the final mile in 4:58 to win in 15:22. Ian Chant breaking 17m with 16:52 and junior male Mark Boot 17:10 led home the club’s men. Cath Kindred 21:34, Sarah Crannage 21:55 and Vicky Beaumont 22:42 were first back in for the ladies. Coventry Autumnal 5

A rare race outing for Sharon Orridge saw a 1st lady victory with 21st place and 30:02.

John Fraser 10

Rob Fox claimed another 1st V50 with a return to this undulating Leicestershire race. With few 10 mile races around Rob came closer to his goal of running sub-60 minutes as a 50 year old with 60:34 and 22nd place. He’ll get another opportunity in October when he, John Birch and Dicky Wilkinson take on the British Masters 10 mile team championships in Bristol.

Risley

Long Eaton Running Club hosted a tri-club race against Shelton Striders and Holme Pierrepont on the paths and lanes between Risley, Stanton-by- Dale and Dale Abbey. The race devised and organised by Phil Abbott took in a varied and interesting route with great views and ran on a beautiful late summer’s evening. The winner of this inaugural race over 5.9 miles and 650 feet was Shelton’s Shaun Cooper in 41:23 with Long Eaton’s Paddy Fitzgerald 2nd 42:38 and Cath Rowe 1st lady in 8th in 51:15. Fell

Bradbourne Fell Race

David Denton’s 5.2 miles and 850 feet race over two laps with a stream crossing saw Phil Abbott 14th in 38:46 with John Birch 20th and 1st V50 in 40:20 and Colin Bostock 98th and 56:12.

Eyam Barrel Inn Fell Race

Part of the village of Eyam Wakes celebrations this 6.5 mile 1500 feet race is a tough race over rough tracks, lanes, moorland and a technical descent down a gloomy woodland path and a little sting in the tale climb just before the finish. Phil Abbott had a strong run for 30th in 48:23, Cath Rowe 82nd 56:56 and 1st LV50, Bill Sheppard 83rd 57:09, Colin Bostock 91st 58:23 and Pete Sturgess 149th 1:11:27.

Great Longstone Chase

An elderly gentleman in possession of a hand gun is scary enough but when it’s Roy Hattersley a drenching’s more likely as he’s the race starter! This year’s club fell championship race with a long initial climb, long descent, road climb and final grassy run back into the village covers 4.8 miles and 950 feet.
Phil Abbott led home in 34:18, Bill Sheppard 40:00, Colin Bostock 40:39, Cath Rowe 40:45 and another victory as she’s taken the hills to heart with 1st LV50.

Longshaw Sheep Dog Trials

Part of the World’s oldest sheepdog trials event the fell race of 5.5 miles and 650 feet takes in rough running over gritstone outcrops, tussock grass and heather moor around Higger tor and the Longshaw estate. Phil Abbott jogged around with a hound in tow for 64:52.

Exterminator

The climax of summer Peakland fell racing, Totley AC’s exterminator at 16 miles and 4050 feet has a complete mix of underfoot terrain and route choice selection. Colin Bostock got this year’s fix with a time of 3:23:16.
