Hermitage 10k
On a busy day for LERC what with the Belper 30k and the Erewash Triathlon 6 runners made the trip into Leicestershire to race the Hermitage 10k.
This year the race incorporated the Leicestershire and Rutland AAA championships to add extra interest - however none of the Long Eatoners where born or resident in the counties so no medals were up for grabs.
The course is somewhat challenging with 400ft of climb included which does not abate until the mad dash back into Whitick just after 5 miles.
First back for the club was Phil Abbott in 39:35 in 13th followed by Mario Rocchelli in 39:57 and 14th position. The two runners had swapped positions on the road a number of times with Mario pulling out a large lead at half-way only for Phil to claw it all back just by the 5 mile point and the downhill section.
Next back was Phil Thompson in 45:23 and 49th. The 3rd placing for Phil meant that he leapfrogged Mario in the summer league relegating Mario to 4th overall with 2 races to go.
Next to cross the line was the 1st Long Eaton lady - Catherine Rowe. Catherine, tired from back to back races in the week was apprehensive about the hilly course but took it all in her stride finishing in 47:10 as 4th lady and 1st F40 - not bad considering she is actually an F50!
Colin Bostock was next back in 48:41 and 70. Colin has raced every Hermitage 10k from it's inception so was fully aware of what he was about to face. Strangely he seemed to be looking forwards to it with glee.
Damian Cowlishaw finished in 50:47 and 81st and continued his good form with a a course best by over a minute.
The event was finished off with a BBQ, ice creams and some home-made Italian flapjacks. Well, I don't think the recipe is Italian but they were certainly made by one - cheers Mario!
Great Yarmouth half marathon
Ian Chant was 11th in 1:23:05.
Fell
Ricky’s Race
Hosted by Matlock AC the competition at this 4.5 mile 600 foot race gets stronger each year. On a warm evening but damp underfoot this year the route lies over fast woodland paths and climbs quiet lanes and stony tracks before a short and sharp shark fin of a ridge at the end leads to a quick descent through fields to the Three Stags Heads pub where category winners get their novel prizes of baskets of fruit. Dicky Wilkinson and Phil Abbott with Borrowdale fell race and Teversall still in the legs were first back in 34:29 22nd 2nd v50 and 35:08 28th respectively. Bill Sheppard with fresher legs just pipped Colin Bostock 40:35 64th to 40:53 68th, good to see Duncan Gedge over the hills in 40:55 69th chasing Colin down and fell faithfuls Sean Gauton with Pete Sturgess coming home in 44:35 93rd and 51:08 111th. Performance of the night goes to Cath Rowe 85th overall and 1st LV50 with 43:14.
Belper 30k
Having found its way into the FRA calendar for 2010 this popular race with 300-400 runners and walkers winds its way over the Chevin to Blackbook then on to Alport Heights through Shining Cliff woods before a derwent valley finish at Belper rugby club. In hot and humid conditions Eddie Mathieson set a fast pace early on but was caught 3 miles from home struggling with blistered feet by Dicky Wilkinson who finished 18th 2:21:36 1st v50 with Eddie a few minutes behind 32nd in 2:27:16. Duncan Gedge finished a shade over 3 hours in his second fell race of the week for 3:09:34 and 207th and Pete Fowles returning from injury recovered from a route error and two falls to complete in 4:43:53 341st . Walking the event and giving support en route were Colemans Karen, Debbie and Glen, Pete Thorburn, Ian Wallis and June Foulke.
Ultra
Scant details available but news trickles in that Andy Dickenson and his hip replacement along with Pete Sturgess part of a team of dad’s raising funds for young Breaston footballers covered the 84 miles of the Hadrian’s wall long distance path in under 48 hours.
Triathlon
The Erewash Borough Council organised event based at Long Eaton’s West Park kicked off with a junior aquathlon and 1 mile family fun run on Saturday. The swim then run event had a number of different distances and attracted many youngsters. LERC’s Mark Harrison held a commanding lead but had to settle for 1st v40 as he was dipped on the line by his son! The triathlon the following day was deemed a great success and special thanks from the event organisers to members of long eaton running club were given for the support and marshalling duties over the two days. The triathlom comprised a 400m swim, 16K bike ride and completed by a 5K run. Winner of the event was Samuel Parker in 51:12 with splits of 5:35 / 25:23 / 19:14. LERC’s Darren Pyefinch was a highly placed 22nd in 58:53 with splits of 8:13 / 27:37 / 21:45. (Please add your results to the triathlon posts on the forum if I’ve missed you off).
