Newark Half Marathon
It was a very warm humid day (97% humidity) and 25 degree heat that greeted the runners in the 28th Newark Half Marathon, the deceptive course having 2 long uphill climbs between 9 and 10 miles and again between 11 and 12, but happily a downhill stretch between 12 and 12.5. 8 Current Lerc member ran along side Neil Renault who turned out to be the eventual winner by a massive 3 mins and 1 sec and took the £150 1st place prize. The Ladies who took part from LE were Sarah Harris and Jackie Mather both of whom had suffered from problems in the days leading up to the race but both overcame those problems and finished in good times with Sarah 3rd over the line albeit with very unsteady legs in a time of 1:23 and Jackie a decent 1:42. Of the 1036 finishers in the race 6 men wer from Long Eaton ,Mark Harison having a jolly since his good time at Jagermiester 2 days before set 1:46 and 348th, Duncan Gedge who has run this race each of the last 3 years said its hot yet again and finished in 1:54, revitalised new member Philip Sugden was 354th . John Birch added to his race tally with a fine 1:29 and Mens Captain, Shaun Burton was happy to be under 1:40 with a 1:39 suffering in the Humidity on the uphill sections of the half Marathon. Jackie,Neil,Sarah and Shauns Coach, Andy MacNeil picked off runers at a fair old rate as his race plan worked with his consistent pace and he finished in 12th place in a fast 1:17, It was his wife's Birthday as well so it was double celebrations in the McNeil Household.
Jagermiester 10Km

Pb’s went to: Paddy Fitzgerald 38:12; Phil Thompson 42:47; Vicky Beaumont 50:34 and Nina Iacovitti 53:30. Full results below:

Notts. AAA Summer League
Teversall country park always provides the venue for the closing race in the 5 event series that began back in April at Epperstone. At 5.8 miles and over trails, quiet country lanes and a disused railway line this is an undulating and demanding course. Rob Fox ran a stunning top 10 finish (10th) for the first time in 34:03 and was ably supported by Andy Colgate 13th 34:27, Ian Chant 34:51 22nd and junior man Mark Boot 35:23 28th and Dave Boot’s fantastic run of 47th and 36:50 helped secure the vet mens’ team final placing.Cath Rowe came home first for the ladies 43:11 with Vicky Beaumont making her Teversall debut 47:30 63rd and the ever present Debbie Coleman 49:15 79th.
Rob Fox secured a very worthy individual county bronze medal whilst the vet men of Rob Fox, Paddy Fitzgerald – with an exceptional and consistently high scoring race series, Dicky Wilkinson, Ed Murden, Dave Boot, Andy McNeil, John Birch and Tim Doyle had their best result in this competition winning the team county silver medal. The senior mens’ team finished 4th. Full results from the night below:

4.5 miles and 797 feet provides runnable hills over a wooded ridge, narrow paths, quiet lanes and a final lung bursting descent down a stony gulley. Dicky Wilkinson 31:50 7th and 1st V50 led home John Birch 32:45 10th and 2nd V50, Colin Bostock in his pre-Borrowdale race 38:56 40th, David Harper enjoying his debut over the hills a pleased 39:59 44th and fan of David Denton’s races, Damian Cowlishaw 46:27 64th. Carole Birch fresh from her 52 mile ultra race was 62nd 45:59.
Borrowdale
Clag down, occasional rain, some deep boggy ground early on and wet, treacherously slippery rocky blocks over the Scafell range made this year’s race a real challenge. Dicky Wilkinson first back bloodied, bruised and ravaged with cramp on Dalehead was 4:25:53 147th just ahead of the strong running Eddie Mathieson 4:31:33 170th. Alan Maplethorpe had a trouble free race and was pleased with his 4:42:59 and 208th. Phil Abbott also struggling with severe cramp 5:14:04 298th.
Track
Rob Fox dropped down in distance and took on the Tim Wealthall mile in his first track race since 1990! In the series of time graded races, Rob elected for the sub-5 minute group and was rewarded with an excellent 4:59.7 and 9th place – not bad for an old ‘un!
Triathlon
The inaugural Outlaw Triathlon based at the National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham saw about 1000 athletes take on the classic Iron Man Triathlon distance of a 2.4 mile open water swim in the lake, a 112 mile undulating bike ride around rural Nottinghamshire and finish with a full 26.2 mile marathon on a 4 lap course taking in Trent Bridge and Victoria Embankment. A massive club well done to Vreni Voehoven and Mark Goodson for competing. Vreni was 291st and 1st LV45 with swim / bike / run splits of 1:15:07 / 5:48:40 / 4:45:33 for 11:57:39 and Mark 554th with 1:10 / 6:54:11 / 5:08:58 for 13:34:40.
An epic sporting achievement for you both!
