Race summary 16th June to 22nd June
The annual Horwich Carnival of Races held on a 3 lap closed town centre course hosted the British Masters Athletic Federation 5 Km championships. On an undulating course in very hot conditions, Rob Fox finished 33rd equalling his seasons best with 17:03, Dicky Wilkinson found the lack of mountains no hindrance to setting a season's best 18:20 for 55th and John Birch 18:37 and 67th completed the LERC team. Against strong opposition, Long Eaton achieved a fantastic team bronze medal behind the big names of Bristol and West and Salford Harriers.
In the 3rd Notts road league race at Erewash on the lanes around Risley, Stanton-By-Dale and Dale Abbey, a huge club turn out of 27 men and 8 ladies enjoyed a perfect summer's evening for this hilly 5 mile race. Paul Lewis 4th 29:38, Rod Harris 5th and good to see Andy McNeil 13th in 32:05, brought the senior mens team home for 3rd place on the night and overall 4th in the league series. Cath Rowe 25th 39:00, Jodie Smith 39th 41:05 and Sarah Crannage 51st 43:04 led the ladies home. The vet men fielded 4 teams on the night with the A team finishing 2nd on the night to retain overall race series lead but on tied points with Mansfield Harriers. The ladies vet team lie in 4th place overall. Club results below:

A steep climb up through the woodlands of The Haywood then across the Longshaw estate and a twisting, fast descent through Padley gorge woods and a finale splash across the river Derwent, provide the terrain of the 4.8 mile 500 foot Grindleford fell race. Phil Abbott claimed a course best 40:14 and Colin Bostock came home in 48:50. Phil then ran a very different race on a different continent when in Boston in the USA he was 7th and first UK runner in the Revere Beach Fathers' Day 10Km in 40:43.
In the continuing hot weather the Duffield Festival 5 mile race mixes road, grass, tracks and good climbs to make an excellent trail race of 5.3 miles and 570 feet. John Birch was 4th and 1st V50 in 35:09, Dicky Wilkinson 5th 2nd V50 in 35:49, Rob Jackson 13th 2nd V40 in 37:26. Carole Birch in training for a 50 mile ultra race in July ran a course best 50:37 for 105th and 3rd V45.
Lying between the Manifold and Hamps valleys just inside Staffordshire, Calton fell race must surely be the finest limestone fell race in the White Peak. Footpaths and traverses, short sharp ascents and descents and grassy tracks lead to the final climb of Soles hill and its top section that has runners grasping the turf as the angle steepens. In warm, evening sunshine with cattle and sheep grazing, the cut hay drying in the sun and the views over toward Dovedale, this is a very special part of England. Dicky Wilkinson ran a course best 39:40 for 10th and 3rd V50 and Pete Sturgess in his first race in the hills this year was 73rd in 60:48.
First event in the Heritage Grand Prix 4 race series held at Holme Pierrepont over 10 Km attracted 45 Long Eaton runners. The race hosted the Nottinghamshire 10 Km Championships and 3 LERC runners were successful with superb medals with: Jackie Mather was 15th 44:43 for V45 silver; Cath Rowe was 16th 44:48 for V45 bronze; and Paddy Fitzgerald was 24th 39:00 for V40 bronze. Paul Lewis in a course best 32:35 and Sarah Harris 36:48 excelled once again for first man and lady. Rob Fox continues to impress with 5th place and 1st V50 in 36:22. A number of pb's were achieved: Chris Wood 42:02 48th; Darren Pyefinch 43:44 68th; Dan Jackson 43:44 143rd; and Kathy Crockford 57:12 106th. Strong performances on the night should put Long Eaton in a good position in the team events. Club results below:
