Race summary 11th May to 18th May
Race summary for 11 to 18 th May
As the evenings’ light lengthens further and the weather improves, so the race calendar gets bigger. The Burbage Skyline fell race traverses 5.75 miles and 1200 feet of fine dark peak gritstone over Carl Wark, Higger Tor and Burbage Edge as part of the Gritstone Fell Race Series. Long Eaton fell stalwarts Phil Abbott 111th 50:37, Amorri Vhis 119th 51:46 and Colin Bostock 226th 59:36 enjoyed this fine spring classic in cool conditions.
In the second race of five in the Notts Road Race League, a large LERC contingent converged on the National Water Sports Centre at Holme Pierrepont to enjoy perfect racing conditions. The course of exactly 5 miles around the lake, quiet lanes and tracks is flat and fast and draws out many of the competing league teams’ runners eager for personal and season’s bests. The old fellas of Long Eaton extended their lead in the mens’ veteran championships by winning for the second time; senior men were 4th and lie in 4th place overall; senior ladies were 12th (no overall place as no team in the first race); and a tremendous 3rd place for the veteran ladies on the night to maintain overall 3rd place. Nine runners dipped under 30 minutes led home by Paul Lewis in a pb of 26:03 and 4th place, Rod Harris 7th 26:33 and Rob Fox 27:43. The first four club ladies home all claimed pb’s with: Cath Benson 21st and 33:51; Jackie Mather 28th 34:40; Vreni Verhoeven 37th 35:43; and Cath Rowe 46th 36:22. Very well done all especially to all those achieving pb’s. Full results here:

In the UK Trail Running Championships medium distance race held over the rolling hills of Wiltshire in The Marlborough Downs Challenge, Dicky Wilkinson covered the 19 miles and 1500 feet climb in 2:13:35 for first place and to claim his first British Championship title. In ideal racing conditions, Wilkinson in a group of four, broke away early on in the race as it threaded its way through meadows and woodland trails before climbing up onto the downs. After half way Wilkinson pushed on running the last 9 miles alone to finish over 3 minutes ahead of second place.
Three Days in May is the title given to a trio of fell races in the west of Derbyshire and part of the Hayfield collection of races held over one weekend. Amorri Vhis competed in all three races to finish a highly respectable 23rd in the series and his individual performances were: May Queen 3 miles 700 feet – 47th 27:19; Mount Famine 5 miles 1850 feet – 80th 59:00; and the Lantern Pike Dash 1.2 miles 630 feet (just think 0.6 mile up turn round and then run sub 3:30 mile pace on the way down!) - 25th 15:11. Ed Murden ran Mount Famine in a very brisk 51:43 for a 29th placing in this competitive race.
Further from home than most, Karen Levers took on the Great Wall of China half-marathon in a time of 2:52 – will this be in the summer league next year?
What must surely be Derbyshire’s toughest road race the Eyam half-marathon, had Duncan Gedge 1:52:02 172nd, James Parkinson 1:56:38 219th and Suzanne Newman 2:07:13 do battle with this beast.
Much closer to home the Aston on Trent 10km race part of the clubs summer race league attracted twenty runners with Rob Fox first home in 4th in 37:43 for the men and Cath Rowe bringing the ladies back first in 38th with 45:39. Well earned pb’s for David Harper 53rd 47:22, Daniel Jackson in 97th 54:03 and Vicky Beaumont in 88th 52:30. Full results below:

Donning their studs once again for their weekly off road fix, Phil Abbott 59th 43:15 and Colin Bostock 158th 51:39 enjoyed a beautiful evenings sport in the Totley Moor fell race.
In the second Booth’s Decorators Summer League race series a good turn out of 19 LERCers travelled to Teversall for the 4.8 mile trail race that undulates its way to the highest point in Nottinghamshire. In warm, still and dry conditions, Rob Fox continued his recent fine form with 13th place in 28:39 hotly pursued by junior male Mark Boot in 15th and 28:45. John Birch in fine form ahead of his White Peak Marathon this weekend made a good return with 30th place and 30:02. A strong ladies team of Cath Benson 99th in 33:59, Monica Fee 132nd in 35:18, Cath Rowe 138th in 35:34 and Vreni Verhoeven 173rd in 37:35 must improve Long Eaton’s position in the combined team event.
