Race summary for May 8/9th

Race Summary for 8th to 9th May

In a very rare outing on the track, Dicky Wilkinson competed in the two day Derbyshire Track and Field Championships held jointly with Nottinghamshire at Berry Hill Park, Mansfield. In the 5000m in cold and windy conditions he struggled to finish 4th in 18:46 but came back the next day in the masters 3000m to claim the silver medal in 10:43.

In the Halstead Marathon just two weeks after his 3:11 London Marathon, Phil Abbott in his attempt to secure a qualifying time for next year’s London made a valiant effort and was 54th in 3:18:02.

After a lay off due to a viral illness, Sarah Harris had a hard race at the Hinckley Half Marathon and still managed an excellent 22nd place and 2nd lady with 1:23:03. Also running was Richard Syson with 625th and 1:59:56.

The Larwood 10K, a counter in Long Eaton’s club summer league, attracted 3 runners with: Carol Prokopyszyn 89th in 50:36; Daniel Jackson 153rd and 55:42; and Richard Mckie 155th and 55:50. Carol writes about the race, “Baking hot in Worksop- sounds odd but it was so. A rather limited turn out of one chap and one chap-ess made the long haul to Shireoaks for the Larwood 10k. The course was new this year following (I'm sure they said this..) a plane crash on the previous course rather disrupting the route. It can only be described as a rugged route! Good points were the weather, mainly off-road, lots of canal towpath, lovely countryside, many cheering locals, friendly marshals, top quality t-shirt. Bad points were 5 stiles, 3+ kissing gates, a big hill near the start and a horrible ankle-killing ploughed field at the end. Not PB territory, good for a countryside amble- but next time I'll borrow a dog and walk it instead”.

(Other races from the previous weekend of 1-3ed May were:

Kate Turner 27th and 42:19 in the 3.73 Neolithic CaniX race;

Mark Harrison and Peter Wilkinson in an ultra race on Dartmoor of about 50Km in a tremendous 6hours 5minutes;

Bob Crockford celebrating a pb in the half marathon in the Great Limerick Race with 2:18:36;

and Dicky Wilkinson in the Derbyshire Fell Running Championships within the 8.2 mile 1761 feet Crowden Horseshoe fell race was 37th overall and championship 13th and 2nd V50.
