Race results summary for 14 - 20th April 2010

Wednesday 14th April saw the five race Notts Road Race League begin with the 5.9 mile Epperstone race. Once the hill in the first mile is negotiated (hopefully not at lunatic speed) the course descends quickly to become a fast flat race with a county lane finish that never seems to end! 20 men and 4 ladies made the trip out on a perfect evening for racing. 5 LERC men got inside the top 50 with: Rod Harris 5th 32:32; a fantastic 15th and 34:08 for V50 Rob Fox; hotly pursued by the ever improving Ed Murden 17th 34:13; followed in by Gareth Watson, Paddy Fitzgerald (in good form for the London Marathon) and Dicky Wilkinson. Special mention to the ladies team on the night of Cath Benson in 18th 41:07, Cath Rowe 35th 43:16, Vreni Verhoeven 46th 44:00 and Carol Prokopyszyn 65th 46:48. It’s a trek out to this race so thanks and well done to all for wearing the blue and white.

The Lochaber Marathon at Fort William hosted the British Masters Marathon Championships on Sunday 18th April. Dicky Wilkinson put months of long fell racing to good use breaking away from a pack of other V50 runners at 11 miles to take almost 3m off his previous best marathon, last run 25 years ago, to finish 16th overall in 2h 54m 33s, 2nd V50 and to win his first individual British Championship silver medal.

In the inaugural Brighton Marathon, husband and wife, Paul Moffett and Zoe Fletcher endured the heat with about 8000 other runners to run the magic 26.2 miles. Paul set a new pb to complete in 3h 12m 13s and 195th and Zoe was 3h 58m 51s and 2293rd. Well done both and a great reward for a long hard winter of training.

At the Bramcote 5K on Friday evening April 16th 12 LERC runners ran out with Catherine Benson coming home 1st lady and 17th overall with 21:17. Pb performances on the night were recorded by Kathy and Bob Crockford with 97th/29:00 and 101st/29:17 respectively.

The 2nd running of the PAWS 10k, held at Cotgrave Country Park on Saturday 17th April, was over a mainly flat course of gravel tracks except for the sharp 400m Hill at 5K. This charity race for Dogstar raises money to try and eradicate Rabies. A good turn out with more than 200 runners was over twice that of last year. Sunny but not too hot conditions saw mens’ captain Shaun Burton run a course best by 3 minutes with 43:32 and a top 30 Place. Asked immediately after crossing the finishing line in the Paws 10k Dog Charity race how he felt, he replied, "Rough"!

Denby was the first venue in the Booth’s Decorators Road Running League – a series of evening races of about 5 miles in distance in Derbyshire involving local clubs throughout the spring and summer months on Tuesday evenings. Fields of over 250 are common for these popular and testing mainly off road trail style races. Long Eaton had 23 runners out on the night for this 5.2 miler and the pick of the performances were: junior male Cameron McNeil 19th 31:27; closely followed by V50 Rob Fox in 21st 31:32; Mario Rochelli continuing to improve with 46th 33:23; and Alan Maplethorpe V50 in 71st 35:09. The four competing ladies were: Cath Benson 93rd 36:21; Vreni Verhoeven 160th 39:40; Carol Prokopyszyn 179th 40:46; and Cath Rowe 238th 46:00. Well done all LERC runners racing on the night.

Good luck to all Long Eaton Running Club members in this weekend’s London Marathon. Smile for the camera when you cross the line as we’ll be watching you on the telly, beer in hand! Have a great race!
