Race results summary for the weekend 10/11th April 2010
After a long hard winter, those tough runs in the dark, cold and wet are paying off as this weekend saw many pb’s from LERC runners in another busy race schedule. In the Derby 10Km, Sarah Harris dictated the ladies race with another victory in a new best of 35m 18s and 17th overall. Paul Lewis in pursuit of a sub-2:30 marathon at London, achieved a tremendous pb of 32m 22s and 6th place. Rob Fox continues to dominate the local Vet 50 race scene with another win for 20th in 35m 38s. Good to see junior male Mark Boot back racing with 38m 16s and well done to pb’s for Chris Bradley 43m 11s, Peter Wilkinson 44m 50s, Karen Levers 52m 24s, and Anne Townsend 65m 16s.
At the Belvoir Half Marathon, many of the club’s hopefuls racing in the London Marathon used this race as a final progress check after months of hard training. First home in 20th with 1h 20m 51s was Ian Chant with the next four LERCers all breaking the magic 1h 30m and all achieving pbs: Paddy Fitzgerald 1h 22m 33s; Phil Abbott 1h 24m 16s; Mario Rocchelli 1m 29m 04s; and Paul Clarke 1h 29m 05s. Excellent pb’s also to: Phil Thompson 1h 34m 17s; John Hay 1m 34m 52s; Darren Pyefinch 1h 38m 55s; Catherine Rowe 1h 41m 14s; Steven Pyefinch 1h 41m 34s; Philip Sugden 1h 42m 25s; Bill Shepherd 1h 43m 35s; Carol Prokopyszyn 1h 52m 11s; Vicky Beaumont 1h 53m 00s; and Stephen Grace 1h 55m 23s.
Meanwhile in the Silent Valley of the Mourne Mountains in Northern Ireland, Dicky Wilkinson competed in the Slieve Binnian fell race. At 10 miles and 4500 feet of ascent of very steep and rocky ground, this first counter in the British Fell and Hill Running Championships was blessed with perfect weather and saw runners applying sun screen. Despite losing time to remove a stone lodged in his socks, he finished 107th and 3rd Vet 50 in 2h 27m 54s and is currently placed 10th overall in the over 50 British Championship. Completing his trio of Celtic races alongside the 2nd Vet 50 at the Manx Mountain Marathon will be the Lochaber Marathon at Fort William next weekend.
