Andy and Natalie finish on top at Markeaton Park
On 11th October 2008 Markeaton Park played host to the North Midlands Cross Country League race 1. It was humid and drizzled throughout which made it near perfect running conditions. The women’s race was over distance at 3.8 miles and Natalie Fryer was first home for the club in 36th position with a time of 28:00. Caroline Waterhouse finished in 50th position in 29:34. Zoe Fletcher and Debbie Coleman ran the course together, with Zoe crossing the finishing line ahead of Debbie in a time of 32:28, in 75th position. Debbie finished in 32:30, in 76th position.
There was a great turnout by the men, including a rare race appearance from Clive Allison. The men’s race was under distance at 5.75 miles and the drizzle a little heavier. Andy Colegate lead from the off, crossing the finishing line in 34:00, in 35th position. Gareth Watson, who looked strong throughout, was next home for the club. Gareth completed the course in 36:32, in 90th position. Phil Abbott finished in 114th position with a time of 38:04, with Alan Mablethorpe finishing in 39:37 in 141st position. Rob Jackson completed the course in 40:04, coming home in 148th position. Clive Allison, making his return to racing finished in 41:12. Paul Burchell, who smiled as he raced around the course, crossed the finish line in 42:40. Chris Robson, who flashed his tummy to spectators, including Brione Abbott and Vicky Yeomans, on the home straight, finished in 43:05. The best, however, came at the end with the ultimate sprint battle between Shaun Burton and Damien Cowlishaw. Damien Cowlishaw made up a huge amount of ground on Shaun over the last lap of the course and unfortunately or fortunately for Shaun, simply ran out of metres and failed to catch Shaun. Shaun finished in 45:07 with Damien crossing the finish line in 45:15. Well done Damien, you gave it your all!
The next race in the league is on 8th November at Corby.
