Winter League kicks off with Crossdale 10k
With the Summer League merging straight into the Winter League it was no real surprise that there was only a small turnout from Long Eaton Club runners at the Crossdale 10k.
An unseasonably hot day made things interesting for competitors, but the very scenic, off road route was compensation. The race started on a downhill grass bank and then out into the fields and paths around Keyworth, with a turn around point at about halfway. The uphill finish was hard work on tired legs. Alan Maplethorpe was first home for the club and 20th overall in 42:32. Shaun Burton just managed to hold off Mark Goodson on the uphill finish, finishing 71st overall in 49:02. Mark, who completed his first marathon one week ago, crossed the line in 49:11 finishing 72nd. Damien Cowlishaw who ran the Mablethorpe marathon one week ago completed the course in 52:32, finishing 99th. There were 179 finishers.
Eight club teams competed in the race, 4 runners making up a team. The winning team was Redhill Road Runners. Long Eaton men finished in a respectable fifth place. Well done.
Representing the ladies was Vreni Verhoeven, who was the second runner home for the club. Vreni finished in 49th position with a time of 47:28 and finished 3rd in her age category.
