Lercers on the Fells
Calver Fell Race
On Wednesday 4th June 2008 four members of the club competed in the Calver fell race, a 5 mile race with 900 ft of climb. As in previous years the weather was warm and the course was dry and dusty. With two long, tough climbs followed by a good descent on a limestone quarry access road and then more downhill on grassy moorland with plenty of rocks to watch out for, underfoot conditions were difficult given the amount of loose rocks on the course but these conditions suited Phil Abbott perfectly. He was first home for the club for the second consecutive year, finishing in a new course best time of 38:38 (38th). Phil Walters finished in 43:50 (82nd), Colin Bostock finished in 45:15 (93rd) and Vicky Yeomans finished in 48:12 (117th).
Tansley Hill Fell Race
On Thursday 5th June 2008 two members of the club competed in this 4.45 mile, 600 ft fell race. John Birch finished 4th overall and 1st M45. He set a new course best time of 29:20. Carol Birch also set a new course best time of 42:50.
Castleton Fell Race
On Friday 6th June 2008 seven members of the club made the journey to Hope Valley to compete in this 6 mile, 1500 ft fell race. The weather stayed dry and cool. It is a challenging course beginning with a long climb to the top of Lose Hill followed by a rocky run along the ridge via Bak Tor and Hollins Cross to Mam Tor. After running round the trig point it was back towards Hollins Cross, followed by a steep descent to the right, leading eventually to a quiet lane and back to the sports field were the race began. Glen Coleman was first home for the club, finishing in a new personal best time of 51:27 (34th). Phil Abbott also set a new personal best time of 53:41 (50th), a great performance and his second race in three days. Jon Vardy had a great race, finishing in a time of 1:02:44 (118th), beating his dad. Jon is going from strength to strength. Colin Bostock who was also competing in his second race of the week (although not that unusual for Colin, admittedly) finished in 1:03:30 (123rd). Tony Vardy finished the course in 1:06:57 (142nd), closely followed by Vicky Yeomans, who finished in 1:08:11 (150th), which was a good performance considering this was her third fell race of the week. Pete Sturgess finished in a time of 1:12:14 (161st).
Ambergate Fell Race
On Sunday 8th June 2008 four members of the club competed in this 4.88 mile, 1059 ft fell race through Shining Cliff Woods. John Birch, who was representing Matlock AC set a new course best time of 39:35, finishing 4th overall. Damien Cowlishaw was next home for the club, also finishing in a new course best time of 53:56 (37th). Shaun Burton who was competing in this race for the first time, finished in 55:29 (44th). Also competing in this race for the first time was Carol Birch who finished in 59:37 (49th).

Glen Coleman had his second win of the week for the club, finishing in a time of 44:19 (42nd). Phil Walters finished in 52:28 (104th), with Colin Bostock finishing in 53:39 (115th), followed by Jon Vardy who finished in 57:24 (140th), beating his dad for the second time in as many days. Tony Vardy completed the course in 1:00:44 (155th).
