14th Halstead & Essex Marathon
On Sunday 11th May 2008 two Long Eaton Runners made the journey to Halstead to make their debuts in the 14th Halstead & Essex Marathon.
There was a festival mood at the start of the race and the weather was hot and sunny.
The 26.2 mile course followed the country lanes North East of Halstead, through Pebmarsh and onto Twinstead. The support from the marshals, local organisations and charities was immense.
The public of Halstead and neighbouring villages also played a vital role as they cheered the runners round the undulating course. Many runners reported that they were inspired by the local support out on the lanes - some out with hoses and ice-lollies for runners!
John Birch completed the course in a time of 3:16:11, finishing 20th overall. Carole Birch finished 289th overall with a time of 4:42:06. 428 runners finished.
