Coniston Trail Race
On 6th October 2007 Phil Abbott and Vicky Yeomans took part in the final trail race of the Lakeland Series 2007 in Coniston. The weather was glorious, unseasonably warm for the time of year and it was in fact a relief to run up the hills to cool down!
As usual the race was really well organised with great facilities for both runners and spectators.
Phil completed the 15km course in 1:16:25 whilst Vicky completed the course in 1:27:00. The course followed footpaths and bridleways taking in panoramic views of Lake Coniston and the surrounding peaks of the Old Man, Swirl How, Wetherlam and Dow Crags. There were also a few technical sections, including one short 200m section after approx 3.5km, which would have been more suited to agile mountain goats, so definitely a race that Andrei Vais should take part in next year.
The course finished with a great downhill section through woodlands and along Lake Coniston. The Series is a great introduction to trail racing and entries are already open for next year’s event.
