Stanage Struggle Fell Race
On Sunday 23rd September 2007 7 LERCers made the trip to Hathersage to take part in this 6 mile fell race.
Phil “No Fear” Abbott and Andrei “Fell Monkey” Vais had a closely fought battle for first for club place, which ended with Phil pulling off the biggest shock of the season by beating Andrei in a time of 49:32. Andrei finished in 50:02
Colin had a good run finishing in 53:33. Vicky finished 57:15, despite having had a collision with a stile gate en route, which was the result of runners behind her failing to brake in time to tackle the stile. Vicky was closely followed by Ian Wallis who came home in a time of 57:18. Tony Vardy who was making his return to competitive running, finished in 1:00:58. Damien “Ironman” Cowlishaw, who completed his first marathon only a week ago and participated in Striders yesterday had an enjoyable run finishing in 1:01:46. Karen Preston tackled the Stanage Struggle in a respectable time of 1:17:10.
It was a challenging course, which was very well organised; the marshals were all in fancy dress, including a number of Elvis’ (or is that Elvii?) who serenaded the runners around the course. Hot drinks and homemade cakes which were on sale after the race went down a storm with the runners.
Speaking of cakes, special mention to Andrei who won a spot prize of a fruitcake and refused to share it with the rest of his team mates. Shame on you Andrei!
