Robin Hood Monumental Fell Race

More of a trail race than a fell race this provided a testing route for the runners especially with the recent rains leaving areas very boggy in places.

From a road start the route quickly turns off-road to climb the side of Birchen's Edge on a long but runnable uphill track. On reaching the moor the first of the boggy areas was crossed followed by a gentle downhill on a rock strewn grass track to the main Sheffield to Baslow road. Crossing to the opposite minor road the race turns right to cross the moor above Curbar on a long uphill with boggy sections which was probably the hardest section. A short downhill to cross the Curbar Gap road then onto Baslow Edge for the gradual downhill run to Wellington's Monument followed by a short sharp drop into the woods and the Sheffield Road again, crossing to skirt Gardom's Edge. A short climb is then followed by a longish grassy run downhill to the road and a sprint back to the Robin Hood Inn.

Richard Wilkinson lead the Long Eaton contingent home in 35th place, with Phil Abbott and Rob Jackson in close company about 4 minutes later. Phil Walters, Colin Bostock, Ian Wallis, Sean Gauton and Kev Holland made up the male section with lone LERC female Vicky Yeomans having a strong run following recent Lake District training.
