Sweet Success
The Long Eaton 5 Mile race was held on the 10th of June and with the weather nowhere near as hot as in 2006. With overcast conditions a new course record was set by Billy Farquharson of Notts AC who set a fastest time of 24:36 a full minute ahead of Matt Bond of Sale Harriers, with Derby AC runner Rob Jefferies 3rd in 26:32.
Many of the 352 finishers complemented the organization of the race with many spot prizes and the popular handing out of sweets at the end of the race proving a big hit. Long Eaton also had 13 runners taking part with Sue Watkinson and Brione Abbott setting new best times of 40:42 and 44:19 respectively. Sharon Orridge won her age category in 29:28 and finishing 28th overall. Of the men from Long Eaton Jim Stevenson now 78 completed yet another race in a respectable time of 54:08. Jim started his running in 1948 and it looks like he still has many years and miles left in him yet.
In the 2 mile fun run, 83 people took part. The course entirely within the West Park boundary and was won by Cameron McNeil for the boys in a time of 11:24 with Lauren Rudd 1st back for the girls in 14:52. Both Cameron and Lauren are 11 years old. Kelly Palmer also 11 was running her first Long Eaton Fun Run and raised £55 for the local charity Leonard Cheshire. The goodie bag that each of the runners got at the end of the fun run contained over £2 worth of sweets and chocolates, lets hope its not too long before the finishers are running again to burn off all that sugar!!
