Retford Half Marathon & Stanage Struggle

8 Long Eaton Running Club members made the trip to Retford for the half marathon on Sunday, and were rewarded with a series of good times on the undulating course. Paul Lewis was first home in 1.23, a top ten finish, followed by Sean Matthews and Ian Chant who set a personal best in 1.26.09. John Crannage set a course best of 1.26.50, but the happiest man was Alan Maplethorpe who dipped under the hour and a half for the first time by a massive 5 seconds. Richard Hill was the last male in a solid 1.31.

The two ladies competing both recorded excellent times, with Sarah Crannage in 1.46.05 finishing just 22 seconds in front of Kate Edmond.

In the Stanage Struggle fell race, Glen Coleman mixed it with some of the top local fell runners to finish in the top 30 in 45 minutes 16 seconds. Ian Wallis was the other LERC runner finishing in 54.39. The route climbs from Hathersage up onto Stanage Edge on mostly runnable tracks then heads west along the top past the trig point before a long downhill dash through bracken and over fields finishing back at the school in Hathersage. The marshalls were plentiful and very encouraging and the home-made cakes and biscuits were the best yet - a highly recommended race for next year.
