Shining Cliffs Fell Race & Kirkby Cross Country

Long Eaton Running Club had 14 runners in the fourth and final round of the North Midlands Cross Country League, which took place on Saturday 7th January at Sutton-In-Ashfield. The cold, occasionally sleety conditions didn’t prevent Rod Harris from recording 35:10 and 5th place in the men’s race which, in spite of missing the series’ third round at Berry Hill Park in Mansfield, still meant Harris finishing the competition in 3rd position overall in the Senior Men category. Next home for Long Eaton was Richard Wilkinson in 41:23, with V50’s Mick McDermott and Chris Robson shortly after in 42:18 and 43:44 respectively. The Men’s Team were in 6th place on the day and a fine 7th place overall. In the Ladies, Marianne Hensman put in a great performance to finish in 20th place and 30:40 on the day which gave her 20th place for the overall series as well. The Ladies Team also finished in 7th place on the day and 11th overall.

On Sunday 8th January attention turned to the fells once more, with the first round of the three race Shining Cliffs series at Ambergate in Derbyshire. The surprisingly tough 6.2m course through the woods was attended by 23 club runners, with Richard Wilkinson putting in a creditable debut to finish first for the club in 57:09 and 13th place followed less than one minute and one place later by Clive Allison – back from injury – in 15th place and 58:04. Men’s Captain John Birch also finished under the hour in 22nd place and 59:20. The Ladies race saw Marianne Hensman also forgetting the previous day’s cross country to come home in a creditable 72:19, ahead of around half of the club’s men!
