Notts fell champs race 2 Chrome Hill Saturday June 29th

Dear Nottinghamshire runners

It seems a long time ago that you were setting off up that steep hill to meet rain, sleet, snow and a howling gale, so if you can triumph against those, then the two summer races should be a breeze for you!

At the UK intercounties fell running championships on May 11th at the Flower Scar race hosted by Todmorden Harriers, Notts were represented by full teams of ladies and gents and had a great day out, and huge thanks from me and Notts AAA for proudly wearing the green vest.

After a great start to the Notts Fell Running Championships 2019 at Wolf’s Pit in March with over 50 turning out in wintry conditions, round 2 is at Chrome Hill on Saturday June 29th at 2pm. This is one of England’s finest little fell races in a quiet, beautiful but little known valley just inside the Staffordshire border in the Peak District south of Buxton – a true gem of a race. If I were told I could only do two races a year, then they would be Jura and Chrome Hill. The race is hosted by Hollinsclough C of E Primary School (SK17 0RH for sat navs) in this tiny hamlet and is part of their small summer fete, so please bring your families and enjoy the beautiful scenery and cakes, with proceeds going to support the school.

The race is 4 miles and 699 feet. Bring full kit just in case, but we’ve never been asked to carry gear in the past. There is about 300m of road and the rest is grassy or stony track or grazed farmland and some wet and muddy bits. The route climbs the impressive shark fin shaped limestone reef of Chrome Hill, and when wet, the limestone rock and steep grassy slope need some care – so up to you footwear wise, some folk stick with fell shoes, others, studded trail shoes. If you can print a map off from a map site on the web it might help if the clag’s down – folk have gone walkabout in the past – but I’ll walk the course in the morning and flag and paint spray with arrows, so the route should be obvious.

All you do is enter the race than come to the Notts desk with your number and fill in another slip and that’s it. There’s no presentation after the race and the results will be out on the Notts AAA website within a week and there’ll be Chrome Hill results plus cumulative points scores after the first 2 races. Full rules for this year’s championships race series are on the Notts AAA website fell running pages.

To count for individual medals you have to complete 2 out of the 3 races in the series (see full rules for exceptions). Final race of the series is Longshaw Sheep Dog trials on Saturday August 31st at 10.30am. This race is also the team championship race, so make sure your club has at least 3 runners of any age in both of the races for men and women. In this last race, at the Notts registration some extra things are done so we can work out race positions, but this, and the instructions for the presentation afterwards will follow with a further email to clubs and to this website in late July / early August.

Any queries please email

Looking forward to seeing you all at Chrome Hill,

Dicky Wilkinson
