Well done on the new 10k pb but (general comment to all) let someone at the club with access to the race results data base know of any results that you get - the results archive is only as good as the info it gets.

As for the suggestion of the 1500m instead of the mile, what an appalling idea! No, the distances are now set.

It looks like Anthony Hatswell couldn't squeeze a 1 mile race in before the end of 2014 to complete a top notch year that would have produced a very good sub-400 time in total.

If I've overlooked any results please post in this thread and I'll correct this. The only runner to complete the 400 challenge of 7 races within the year for 2014 was Ian Chant with:

2:59:01 marathon
81:36 half marathon
64:06 10 miles
36:54 10K
29:03 5 miles
17:46 5K
6:00 1 mile

For a total of 414:26 - a tremendous effort over the 7 distances and it just shows how hard it is to break the 400 minute barrier for this challenge.

Good luck to everyone for 2015 and it would be great if we get a few more to complete the challenge and for someone to dip under the magic 400 minutes. The 10 mile distance with few races around and the effort to put in for marathon training still remain the biggest hurdles to overcome.

Nope, a new baby and lack of 1 mile races meant I didn't do one. Though I think it is safe to say I would have been plenty under! My fastest 1 mile rep was 5.00 dead, which was rep 2 of 5 when in marathon training. I think I need a bit more speed... Though if you are allowing official split times for shorter races, the London Marathon do splits for every 5k and more, so would easily be calculable from that to get a 1 mile time, even though a fair way slower than was done in 5ks and similar.

Not sure I will make it this year either - a knee injury means I'm signed up to London and that's it - no halves, 10ks, or anything else!

As 2015 draws to a close, a cursory glance at this year's race standings seems to show no completions of the Challenge 400 (apologies if I've overlooked you and if so please correct with a post in this thread). There are some near misses with surprisingly the 1 mile featuring as an omitted distance - an odd one really as Dave Denton's mid-week series provides a good opportunity.

Let's see if we can get a few in 2016 and with someone from the club going sub-400 minutes.

Yep, I think I missed the 1 mile this year again - the Dave Denton races clashing with Earwash Valley training (which the wife goes to religiously).

Maybe next year :-)

So this is one that has been gnawing on me for a while, and next year I'm throwing down and am going to properly attempt it. This year started really well with a 5k PB (16.45) and a decent HM (1.16) then a good marathon (2.38). After that injury an knee surgery mean I have only just done my first session since April.

The times I'd like to hit are:

<2.35 marathon: London marathon is the target
<74.30 half marathon: Probably the MK half in March - for too long I've been stick at 1.15.04 half PB
58ish 10 miles: Maybe the Notts 10? Need to look for one of these
33ish 10K: Derby 10k on 9 April is ideal - I should be in top shape then, and will be training for 5k/10k
27 5 miles: Weston 5 is what I am thinking (March?) if not there is the HPRC series
16ish 5K: This is the main target for the year - I need more speed endurance. If I get this one, the rest should fall in to place. It'll probably be at a parkrun in the summer, or even the HPRC series
4.45 mile: A hard ask, but if I get everything else, this is about where I will be at, so will enter a Dave Denton or even find a real track race

I don't know where that collection would put me relative to 400, but there you go, my aims for the year and something to look forward to. It is such a good challenge though as it explores the full range of what you can do - is it added as a set of race results in the database, with club records? If not it really should be (the database can be scraped to see who else has done it?) I think Ian would be the record holder at the moment though, as the set was pretty strong throughout.

Let's now see where I end up at given I have no idea if it is possible for me given very limited natural talent, the chance of injuries, and impending arrival of baby number 2. It is at least the plan, though as Mike Tyson famously said, everyone has a plan until they get hit in the face.

Tim Weatherall Mile or Richard Belton 5k - Nott AC track event evening normally held in the summer months - is a possible option if Dave Denton's race have finished before you have completed your challenge

The mile option is a good idea - I was thinking where can I do a mile flat out in the light in a timed way!

Hopefully with parkruns I will get a lot of bites at the cherry, and assuming I can do the HPRC series, then that's another one, but if not, the track is an option too.

I do just like the idea of it. To get all those distances in under quite a punishing time. About 64.6 miles, 400 minutes, is an average pace of about 6.11 needed to achieve it - not an impossible pace, until you consider that there is a marathon which makes up 40% of the challenge (and that pace gets you round in about 2:43). If you get that wrong it is uphill (and rarely can you do 2 in a year). The next part is getting in the races including some difficult to find distances - 1 mile and 10 miles.

Only one Challenge 400 completion in 2016 - using the LERC results so please post below if this is incorrect - and so a big well done to Ian Chant:

Apologies if I’ve used the wrong results or added them up incorrectly – and if so, please correct and post them in the thread – but in 2017 it looks like only 2 runners completed the Challenge 400, so a very well done to Mark Fisher and Shaun Burton.

If I’ve missed anybody off the Challenge 400 then apologies and post your results in this thread. I’ve only sourced data from the club’s results but I do know not every race result is passed on for recording. If you have past race results that are not on the system please give them (usually race name, date, your position and time and any category ie 1st -3rd or age group 1st -3rd etc) to somebody on the committee to update the results.

Good luck all for 2018’s Challenge 400.

This year, this year I will manage it! I just need an injury free year which I haven't had since 2014 when all I was missing was a mile and a 10 mile I think! So far I have a 17.10 5k, which is on track.

Good luck Anthony with overcoming your injuries and the challenge ahead - on track and 1/7 of the way there!

I looked at a variant for the Challenge 400 for a range of middle distance events from 400m (a distance forming part of the training and racing repertoire of most middle distance runners) up to 3000m in a year with a combined time of 20 minutes and so a Challenge 20.

As an example of this with the distances and times that I ran in 1989:

400m 57.1
800m 2:02.9
1000m 2:53
1500m 4:28
3000m 9:28
= 19:49

I'm not sure what's the harder proposition this or the longer Challenge 400 - to get the times in the C20 you have to be very fit but the recovery is quick - I did the above times within a few weeks in the summer - whereas the longer C400 would be over months and would need lots of recovery after the long runs but the times needed are (comparatively) modest. Both have different training regimes; and an even greater challenge is a C20 & C400 in the same year - a real spread of exceptional running from 400m to the marathon.

Gauntlet thrown - anybody willing to pick it up?

Using the Runners' World race time predictor produces this:

400m 65
800m 2:17
1000m 2:54
1500m 4:27
3000m 9:17

for a total of 20:00 exactly.

My times (also in the last post) for 1000m of 2:53 and 1500m 4:28 equate well to the predictor but fall down with my much faster 400m 57.1 and 800m 2:02.9 and slower 3000m 9:28.

The training I did at the time was the usual long steady run up to 16m every other week, weekly 6-8m tempo runs, filler runs and intervals. Most of the intervals were pyramids of 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000 and back down with same distance recovery (and very rarely 100, 200, 300, 400,500,600 and back down) occasionally 6-8 X 800m at 2:20ish 2 min recovery but lots of 8 x 400m 64-68s with 30s recovery and longer sessions of 3 sets of 4x400m 66-72s 90s recovery 2.5 min recovery between sets then a final 2x400m at 60-64s. There were few 1k or longer reps.

The shorter and faster intervals obviously favoured the more anaerobic 400m and 800m and the lack of much longer intervals didn't give any speed endurance - borne out by the fact that at the same time that summer I ran 16:53 for 5K - putting my 2:53 1K time in the predictor gives a 5K prediction of 15:52 a full minute faster than what I ran. Even with error margins within the calculator equation, I think it shows how specific your training has to be for short-middle or long-middle or long distance running and it makes the times achieved by the elite like Mo Farah over a large range of distances running 3:28 1500m, sub 13 5K sub 27 10K and 2:08 even more remarkable.

The marathon really is make or break as it makes up 40% of the challenge. So far I've done 22.4 miles of the 64.6 in 127 minutes, so I need to average about 6:25 a mile for the rest.The other major challenge being logistics - 1 and 10 miles being few and far between
